(Samantha Samson/CBC News) Community clubs across Greater Sudbury are feeling the heat from Hydro rates.

So much so, that the Copper Cliff Curling Club's board of directors is preparing to say goodbye, since they won't be able to afford operation costs this season.

"I'm sad to see it go," says board president Deb Beitschat, although there's no set date for the closing of the club. It's kind of like 'Cheers' — when you walk in the door, everyone says hi to you.

I consider us all family." The club's problems started with a leaking roof they had to fix a few years ago.

"Unfortunately, substantial increases in hydro costs over the past few years have cut into the club's cash reserves, and it cannot afford to buy the required equipment," the board said.

"Hydro is a major expense for curling clubs; our annual hydro bill has gone up 20 (per cent) over the last three seasons.

Water rates have also increased by (per cent) the past (three) seasons. "With these increased hydro rates, our 2017-18 season is in jeopardy." The club, which is more than 100 years old and has more than 200 members, said it has made significant improvements to the curling floor and installed an energy-efficient ceiling in 2015.

"However, our hydro costs have continued to rise, despite our 30 per cent decrease in usage.

"Newer and more efficient equipment would reduce the chance of equipment failure mid-season, help modernize the club's ice plant and decrease ongoing hydro costs, allowing the club to open for the 2017-18 season and be sustainable in years to come." The board said people can support the club by donating to its Go Fund Me page (https:// sharing the Go Fund Me page with others or registering now as a member for the 2017-18 season. "It's scary when something like this happens to a neighbouring facility, as we face many of the same challenges and our board members are often faced with difficult decisions to increase fees.
